Clinical Associate Professor/Clinical Professor and Head of Language Programs, NYU Shanghai (Shanghai, China)
NYU Shanghai seeks a Clinical Associate Professor or Clinical Professor and Head of Language Programs to oversee and develop its language programs. Currently these include required undergraduate courses in Chinese at the elementary to advanced levels; post-advanced courses in Chinese; and elementary Spanish and French courses. We anticipate expanding our offerings in the coming years to include a range of other languages. The study of Chinese and other languages is also integral to our developing graduate programs.
The Head of Language Programs will report directly to the Dean of Arts and Sciences. The primary responsibilities for this position include:
- • Work closely with the Director of the Chinese language department;
- • Together with the Director, work to enhance and expand Chinese language course offerings;
- • Supervise the curricula in other languages and the faculty teaching them;
- • Work with new and expanding majors and degree programs to incorporate language study;
- • Work to establish symmetries and consistency among the NYU Shanghai language programs and the language programs in New York and Abu Dhabi (NYU’s degree granting campuses), as well as NYU’s study centers around the world;
- • The Head of Language Programs will also work closely with the Director of NYU Shanghai’s Writing Program, which offers courses in expository and creative writing and English for Academic Purposes;
- • Work on other relevant initiatives as assigned by the Dean.
The Head of Language Programs is expected to foster an environment that promotes excellence in language teaching and learning; incorporate new methodologies and technologies in language teaching and learning; promote the professional development of the instructional staff; assess the quality of the language courses and the student experience; and teach two courses a year in his or her discipline.
An earned doctorate in a relevant field is required. Candidates should have demonstrated teaching excellence and an interest in teaching in a diverse, international setting. Familiarity with examinations for certification of language proficiency is desirable. Experience teaching non-native speakers of English preferred, but not required. This is a contract position with the possibility of renewal.
